Dedication

Since it’s unknown historical origin, Merasheen Island has stood, carved majestically, in the centre of Placentia Bay, exposed to the most persistent agents of change – time, wind and the north Atlantic; and Merasheen, like all of nature, has slowly changed. Yet, what noticeable difference in the West'rd Head, in the Long Point, in the Dirty Rocks, in the Fender? That which gave Merasheen its character and identity remains the same.

It’s people, too, have experienced the forces of change: – from oar and sail to the gas and diesel engine; from trawl and handline to monofilament nets; from the flake to the freezer; and through Resettlement – the most shocking change of all. Yet much remains unchanged: - the faith which gave us strength; the strong family ties and close friendships found only in an island community that wrested its survival from the sea. These, along with the love for our island home which still draws us back, were developed through generations and will endure in generations to come.

This record is dedicated to those who lived, worked and raised their families in Merasheen. It is dedicated to those who have passed on and to those yet to come who will keep this special community alive. We have said "Farewell" but never "Good-bye".
