The Path Along the Shoreline

by John Pitcher (1969)

Upon a path of floral, sun and glee
A time it was when I was young and free
When most of what I loved, I saw aglow
A time of fewer worries and of woe.

The waves lopped sun beams off the path
Many times there I stopped and quietly sat
To feel the kindly wind upon my face
I saw the white caps flounder as they raced.

I gave my heart to behold its riches there
To fill the loss and life’s sorrow yet to bare
The sunlight placed ripples on the sand
Still yet quite too peaceful to understand.

I thought to wonder what beauty was about
Quickly to the sound of a harbour motor boat
Ringing off the granite cliffs to let me know
At sun set and it would be time for me to go.

Dancing ripples ‘cross the Cove path’s end
Those stars that night tucked warmly in
And in my memories forever will I find
The path along the shoreline in my mind.
