Merasheen Beach

by Helen M. Best-Colgan

Refrain
Merasheen for me is the gem of the Bay
Rising up from the waters in a splendid way
I remember its peace, its picturesque scene
As I played on the beach, and oh how I’d dream.

Sorting pebbles and seashells and glass of all kind
Stepping over the rocks, the kelp and the brine.
Feel salty, rushing waves soaping over my feet
Gathering mussels and caplin, a great island treat.

Refrain - Merasheen for me . . .

As I lie on the wharf peeking through the cracks
Looking down at the fish, gliding through the rocks
There are flat fish and connors and sculpins galore
Staring back up at me from this majestic shore.

Refrain - Merasheen for me . . .

Running through the meadows, prancing in and around the sheep
Popping into the hen house to give a little peep
Jumping over the style, blowing blades of grass
And running back to the beach before the day does pass.

Refrain - Merasheen for me . . .

Climbing over the rocks and on to the hills
Picking berries on the barrens, singing echoes through the rills
Skipping pebbles on the ponds, feel the sky is just a reach
But always back to my friends down on Merasheen beach.

Refrain - Merasheen for me . . .

Lying on my back to view the wonderful sight
The fluffy white clouds and the seabirds in flight
Hear the waves rush in on the rocks in the bay
And refresh my whole body with a shower of sea spray.

Refrain - Merasheen for me . . .
