The Big Hills of Merasheen

by Joseph Ennis

There’s many a time I left my Island home
There’s many a time I sailed over the foam
Of all the grand places that I’ve ever seen
There’s none that I love like I love Merasheen,

It’s a nice place to be on a fine summer day
As I sit on the Big Hill and look across the Bay
I can see Isle Valen so still and serene
As I sit on the Big Hill that overlooks Merasheen.

I can see the wild flowers that never decay
As they grow in the meadows among the tall hay
I can see all the fishermen in their boats white and green
As the fog rolls in over the Big Hills of Merasheen

I can see all our gardens by the side of the road
Where our parents did toil and our vegetables did grow
I can see the moon shining, as it casts a gleam
As I sit on the Big Hill that overlooks Merasheen.

The ruins of our church can be still seen today
And the people who come here they stop and they pray.
Where we joined in God’s graces and many a dream
Came true in the church that overlooks Merasheen.

Once again it is time when I must say good-bye
As I walk to the fish plant a tear fills my eyes
As I sail through the Narrows I think it’s just a dream
As the Big Hill fades away that overlooks Merasheen
