My Merasheen Island Home
by Joseph Ennis
Surrounded by rough waters in the middle of Placentia Bay
There’s an island that’s called Merasheen, I long to be there each day.
It was my home of childhood, where as a boy I roamed
On the rocky roads and ragged cliffs of my Merasheen Island home
Oh Merasheen, Oh Merasheen, why did I leave you so
Exposed to North Atlantic gales, with blinding rain and snow
I think of you each day and night, and when I’m all alone
I wish that I was back again, to my Merasheen Island home
From Pitcher’s Point to the Westerd Head, and up the Great Big Hill
From the Island Cove to the Muddy Hole, it’s so peaceful and so still
It’s not the same now as it was, when as a boy I roamed
On the rocky road and ragged hills, of my Merasheen Island home
Our people all go back there at least once every year
To meet old friends, sing the “Merasheen Farewell”, and enjoy a glass of beer
So when my soul departs from me, bound for that Heavenly Throne
Take me once more across the Bay, to my Merasheen Island home
Yes, take me once more across the Bay, to my Merasheen Island home.
