LAR PITCHER:

Lar was born at Dunn’s Point (or Pitcher's Point) on October 10, 1914. At the age of 13 he started fishing with Dong and Ron Quinton from Haystack. He went trapping that year and made $330 which was quite a hefty sum in those days. The following year he went to Buffett and fished with Pad Houlihan at Cape St. Mary’s. In 1936, Lar went to Hawks Harbour on the Labrador and prosecuted the whale fishery for a Norwegian firm, and following that fished at Cape St. Mary’s for 8/9 years. He married Gert Fulford on April 21, 1935. Lar bought his own punt and gear in the early 50’s and has been fishing out of Merasheen ever since. Lar and Gert had two very unfortunate experiences as their son Ernie, was drowned in the Delroy disaster: the second time that this form of disaster hit the family as in April, 1952 another son Lar Jr. was drowned while working in Greenland. Lar left Merasheen in 1966 and settled in Pt. Verde but returns to the fishery in Merasheen each year.
