RUBBER OTTER

With nothing better to do with their time, Michael Joseph Fulford and Bill Hynes decided this would be the perfect night to play a trick on Mr. Martin Connors. They rigged up a line down in the mash between Mr. Martin's house and Maggie Pittman's and strung a black rubber jacket on the line. With one on each end of the line, pulling it back and forth in the brook, it looked like some black animal was swimming in the water. They enlisted the help of a willing accomplice who ran into the house telling Mr. Martin there was an otter in the brook. When he came running out with his gun, Michael Joseph and Bill Hynes pulled back and forth on the line. When he saw ‘it’ moving Mr. Martin shot at it. ‘Did you get it, Mr. Martin?“ the innocent-looking assistant asked. ‘Yes I did’ said Mr. Martin ‘and never left a maggot in him!’
