Map errors:
Although the map is generally accurate with respect to Big Merasheen, there are considerable errors with name placement in Little Merasheen including:
1. the Potato Point extends to the north within a gunshot of the Fish Rock.
2. until resettlement, Paul’s Beach was often referred to as Hennessey’s Beach although Paul Wilson lived closest to the beach from around 1920.
3. the Fender is the point of land between the government wharf and Hennessey’s Island. It’s incorrect marking on the map is an area known as Connor’s Heights.
4. until resettlement, Ettie’s Beach was never referred to by that name (although Ettie Best lived near it from the 1930s). It was known historically as Best’s Beach (yes, there were two) and in more recent years from the 1950s as the Priest’s Beach. The beach to the east at the bottom of Connor’s Heights was known as Joe Connor’s Beach.
5. the Priest’s house and chapel were physically joined and not separate buildings and known specifically as the Priest’s House.
6. the cemetery by the Island Cove was always referred to as Tommy Yeo’s Point.
7. Dunn’s/Pitcher Point is on old maps as Dunn’s Point but that name had been superseded by Pitcher's Point in the decades leading up to resettlement since several Pitcher families lived there from 1900.
8. Margaret’s Cove is really Big Margaret’s Cove. Paddy’s Cove is further than the area labeled which is Little Margaret’s Cove.
In light of these map errors and inaccuracies, please use discretion when referencing the name placements in Little Merasheen.
