Just Merasheen And Me

by Patricia Ennis-Burke

There's an island that I'll cherish until my dying day
This island is located out in Placentia Bay.
The reason it's so special - this island was my home
Now all of us have left it and in other places roam.

This island once was happy, it welcomed one and all
Men fished there in the springtime, and late into the fall.
The women tilled the gardens and worked ‘til late at night
We children played together, our worries rather light.
Now it sits alone forsaken as the seabirds round it fly
And it cries aloud to heaven, as if it's asking, “Why?
Why have my people left me? Why have my children gone?
Why don't any of them visit? Why don't any of them come?”

I promise one day to return
To that island in the sea
And then we'll sit and chat a bit
Just Merasheen and Me.
