Gabe’s Song

by Gabe Pomroy & Family

Come all ye sons of Merasheen and listen to my tale
Concerning people you may know lived in Placentia Bay
Concerning people you may know lived by land and sea
On a little island in my past that still is dear to me.

‘Twas on the rocks of Merasheen they lived now so they said
And sailed out on the stormy seas to earn their daily bread.
From Master’s Point to Charlie’s Rock those grounds they knew so well
As they cast their nets into the depths beneath the rising swell.

Sure a sou’west breeze one bright May morn still carries through to me
The strong sweet smell from the tanpot well is in my memory.
While bars of twine on the fence reline as the sun sinks ‘neath the hill
That scent alone takes me back home and I’m sure it ever will.

As I walk around that little town that I proudly still call home
O’er hills and fields the seagull reels and screams its bitter scorn
While the white haired man down by the sand who stares out at the bay,
As he waits in vain to see again the loved ones gone away.

For they left a life that served them well to seek a better way
Yet knowing deep within their hearts there soon would come a day
When the things they sought were all for naught and with saddened hearts they say
I want to go back to Merasheen and there forever stay.

And now my song is to a close I have no more to say
But I pray to God that we will meet in Merasheen one day
And we’ll stand out on the Ragged Point and gaze out on the bay
As we wait in vain to see again our loved ones gone away
As we wait in vain to see again our loved ones gone away.
